CORE OF SOUL may not seem like a name, but the trio that make up the band have an almost familiar style to Western audiences, combining often English lyrics with a strange mix of synthesizer and acoustic guitar. Though not as popular as they arguably should be, CORE OF SOUL has released five solid singles and two albums since their major debut in 2001.

The group is made up of three young musicians - vocalist Fukiko Nakamura, computer manipulator Keisuke Iizuka, and guitarist/bassist Song Rui, who alone of the trio does not call Osaka his hometown. Originally from Beijing, Rui met up with Fukiko and Keisuke at an international school in Osaka. The three formed CORE OF SOUL in 1998, though at first they wanted to call the band "CORE OF SUN". Encouraged to become a representative for Osaka in the TEENS' MUSIC FESTIVAL '99, they peformed for a national audience and received a prize - the chance to have their first demo tape produced for limited release.

Their choice of songs for their first demo are actually two of their most memorable songs, "FULL MOON PRAYER" and "Angel". Priced at only 100 yen, the single quickly sold out after it was released in February of 2001. Toshiba-EMI, spotting their talent, signed the band. The first major release of their career came in May of that year, entitled "Photosynthesis".

But enough about their history, this band simply rocks. Fukiko's lyrics are worldly and insightful, and her grasp of the English language often leads to amazing results, such as in "Angel", "Photosynthesis", and a track off of their most recent single, "Cinderella Night in New York". Her Japanese lyrics are equally impressive, if not more stunning. The acoustic guitar is almost characteristic of the CORE OF SOUL sound, and their music tends to be calming, simplistic, and natural. Bands like Do As Infinity come close to the same sound, but Fukiko's voice changes the feel altogether, making the overall effect sweetly akin to a lullaby (save when there's heavy guitar).
